Sodium thiosulfate is a colorless, transparent monoclinic crystal that is easily soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol. The melting point of the pentahydrate is 48 degrees Celsius, and it melts in crystal water when melted.
It is easily decomposed by heat, decomposing into sodium sulfate and sulfur or sodium sulfate and sodium polysulfide, and is oxidized by oxygen at the same time. Sodium thiosulfate decomposes in acid to release sulfur dioxide gas and produce sulfur precipitation. It is heated in the air and oxidized to decompose into sodium sulfate and sulfur dioxide. It burns in an airtight environment to produce sodium sulfate, sodium sulfide and sulfur.
It is a reducing agent for dichromate in tanning, a neutralizing agent for nitrogen-containing tail gas, a mordant, a bleaching agent for straw and wool, and a dechlorinating agent for pulp bleaching. It is also used as a reducing agent in the manufacture of tetraethyl lead, dye intermediates, etc., and in the electroplating industry such as silver extraction from ores, and a water purifier in water purification projects.
In the textile industry, it is used as a dechlorinating agent for cotton fabrics after bleaching, a sulfur dye for wool fabrics, an anti-whitening agent for indigo dyes, a dechlorinating agent for pulp, and a detergent, disinfectant, and decolorizing agent in the pharmaceutical industry. [1] Analytical reagents are used as chromatographic analysis reagents, spot analysis for determining cobalt, photographic fixers, common reagents for volumetric analysis of dechlorinating agents, determination of blood sodium, preparation of injection solutions and disaccharide iron urea culture media, and mordants.
